BIOREME Small Starter Grant: Liam Weaver

In Spring 2024, Liam Weaver, PhD student in Biomedical Systems Modelling, at Warwick University, was successfully awarded £1000 through the BIOREME Small Starter Grant Scheme to conduct a research visit to build and strengthen a research collaboration:

Thanks to the support I received from Bioreme, I was able to visit Professor John Laffey and

Doctor Bairbre McNicholas at the University of Galway to discuss a potential fellowship

application on digital twins. When in Galway, I spoke to Prof

Laffey, Dr McNicholas, and several of their colleagues about collaboration opportunities

within the proposed project, which was further developed and refined through our

discussions. During my visit, I also spent time on the Intensive Care Unit, gaining valuable

insight into the treatment of patients from the clinicians who see them every day. This

reinforced the physical manifestation of my research, something which can often feel quite

abstract within computational work, and  I’d strongly encourage any and all working in the

medical modelling community to try and experience the in-vivo application should

opportunity presents itself. Without the support of Bioreme I would not have had the

opportunity to travel out to Galway and my research would be poorer for it.”

We wish Liam the best of luck with his fellowship application and in the final stages of his PhD programme. If you are interested in finding out more about the small starter grant funding scheme please visit our funding call webpages.
